This article describes the ways of healthy eating according to the science of yoga where both the diet one uses and the yogic exercises are aimed at achieving inner balance in the body.

Mankind has enjoyed the ancient guidance of tips on healthy eating. We are all aware that what we consume has a great effect on our mental, physical and emotional well being. However, we tend to make the mistake of following blanket rules whereas every body is unique and has its own needs. This article tries to explain how you can know exactly what your body needs to eat to be healthy.

Our first keyword is `balance`. Make sure that you do not leave out any foods and consume enough of each of the five food groups every day. The first two are the main groups that we must focus on while the remaining three should not be left out:

First are fruit and vegetables
Eating up to 5 portions a day of this group helps prevent serious illnesses such as cancer thanks to the nutrients in them;
Bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and other starchy foods (wholegrain food rich in carbohydrates provide the body with the energy it needs to keep going);
Milk and dairy products (the calcium we need for healthy bones and teeth is found here but make sure the products you consume are low in fat);
Meat, fish, eggs and other sources of protein (our cells use these nutrients so the body needs them to grow and repair itself);

food/drinks with high sugar and fat ratios (the calories here are mainly to make us feel good and should be consumed very carefully.

Please don`t forget that we will all need to eat different amounts of each group according to the unique needs of our bodies. While people more on the emotional side should be consuming more proteins, people with more active lifestyles should eat less proteins and more of the first two groups.

Whatever your eating habits may be, keep in mind that your body has to consume a lot of water and one should not skip breakfast because the body needs it the most. Feeling thirsty means the body is already dehydrated so it is advisable to make it a habit to consume fluids regularly throughout the day.

You must have heard the word `antioxidant`. The role of antioxidants is to clear out the body. This is similar to detoxing. One third of all your meals should comprise of wholegrain foods such as whole meal bread, muesli, wheat, oats and rice. These ensure a healthier heart.

If you are suffering from high blood pressure, you will need to lower your salt and sodium intake. About one teaspoon a day is the advised quantity for adults.

For those who suffer from diabetes balanced eating is also the key as it helps control the glucose in blood. Your weight will also stay in control.

People with food allergies or sensitivities are advised to read food labels carefully, make sure to replace the nutrients omitted with substitutes and plan their daily meals.

These are easy tips that one can follow during the day. However, every individual has a unique state of the body and therefore, different needs. So the important question is, what does my body need?

To answer this we should first be able to understand the signals our body is emitting and feel which part of us needs special care. Most of us think we know about ourselves really well but none of us can answer exactly why we get heart problems, stomach disorders etc just out of the blue.

Ancient science has revealed that the human body is not only flesh and bone. It is a very intricate combination of matter and spirit. The state of our physical body is greatly affected by the energies of our spiritual body.

Every human has within an energy called Kundalini which lies dormant in the Sacrum bone. This energy is called ‘inner mother’ in many traditions because it, like a mother, can heal and nurture our body. Once awakened, it repairs the body and makes it function as it should.

Moreover, Kundalini energy sends us the signals on the central nervous system that reflect the condition of our body and mind. These signals, which are called `vibrations`, can be felt easily on the finger tips and they fully reflect the unique situation of every individual. Feeling these signals will help you guide yourself and make best decisions as far as your health is concerned.

Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, the founder of Sahaja Yoga meditation, teaches every individual who wishes to learn about the easy way of awakening the inner energy and knowing about one`s own system.

Sahaja Yoga is always practiced free of charge and is easily followed by people of all ages as it does not involve any physical exercise. When the question is healthy eating, it is great that Sahaja Yoga can show you what you need to eat and when.

The Chakras do not start and end with their description or definition - which is where many people stop with their understanding of them. To know their name and position is great but what purpose does that serve? What use is that information to you in your daily life? The Chakras are amazing, organic, 3 Dimensional Centers of Energy and within them they hold so many secrets.

Many people start and end their understanding of the seven Chakras with a simple definition and description.It is not enough to know their individual names and positions, although it is of course a great place to start! What is of more value is understanding the deeper information and being able to incorporate that knowledge into your everyday life. The Chakras are wonderfully diverse centers of energy and can reveal an awful lot about you.

When their energy is combined, it makes up what we call the Aura, the energy field within and around the human body. It is within this energy sphere that psychics can ‘see’ and can discern many things about you that the ‘normal’ person is not consciously aware of.

It is possible to become more aware of such things yourself, to me it is the subconscious mind trying to get your attention. It is very similar to the tell tale signals your body language can give away, without you necessarily being conscious of them yourself. Your body language is linked with your Chakra energy and can be ‘read’ in a very similar way!

There are a great many ways that the Chakras can try to ‘get’ your attention, often by being out of balance. Again there are a whole host of symptoms that would indicate an out of balance Chakra but for the purpose of trying to keep things simple I highlight just one common signal for each of the seven Chakras. For Example;

The Base Chakra;

A good indicator of how stable the Base Chakra might be is to consider what you do with your feet and legs when you sit down in certain situations: You may sit with both feet firmly placed on the floor or you may occasionally cross your legs. In and of itself, there is no great indicator here unless there tends to be a regular and repeated pattern. You may find you often cross your legs tightly, almost winding them around the chair leg, or you may fidget excessively, you may feel the need to raise your feet up off the floor and in some cases sit with your knees bent up in front of you. This can indicate a sense of insecurity which is one of the key elements of the Base Chakra.

The Sacral Chakra;

You may notice you often cover this area, below the navel with your hands; this tends to be out of an instictive need to feel protected. It can be an area that is easily prone to storing fat, in men and women and is linked with how vulnerable you feel in relationships in particular. It is an emotional power house and it is important to be able to ‘flow’ with these emotions otherwise you may encounter creativity problems not just physically but mentally too.

The Solar Plexus;

This Chakra you already associate with your subconscious or inner knowing whether you realise it or not! This is after all the home of your GUT instinct. It is not for no reason we call it this. This Chakra directly links with your core spirit or energy that instinctively ‘knows’ what or who is good for you and which situations are bad. Recall a time when you had a bad feeling about someone or something and you will no doubt recall that sickening feeling in the stomach. Often things happen so quickly that we don’t stop to consider just what our reactions are about or precisely where they affect us in the body.

The Heart Chakra;

This, it is no surprise is all about love. How comforting is it when you feel hurt or upset to receive a loving or caring hug from someone? It is a natural instinct to put your arms around each other and to ‘touch’ hearts. It is a comfort and is in effect two energies of the two people meeting, one giving one receiving in this instance. To watch anyone in pain tugs at your ‘heart strings’ and that is just what it is like if you could see the energy.

The Throat Chakra;

This Chakra not only relates to the throat and neck area but to the organs you use in communication too, your ears, mouth and nose! It is very often associated with your ability to ‘speak your truth’. You may know someone who covers their neck and throat area regularly, either with high collars or scarves. This can indicate that a lot of what they would really like to say is left unsaid or is covered up. This can either result in resentful gossip out of earshot or a build up of ‘unsaid stuff’ that at some point bursts forth in an emotional storm!

The Third Eye Chakra;

It is quite common to see people rubbing or tapping this region as if they are literally trying to ‘grab hold’ of their thoughts. This Chakra is your intuitive center of the mind and unfortunately it can easily be distracted by your conscious, rational mind that deals mainly with logic. You may well have noticed that when you stop trying to chase an illusive thought or name and get on with another, usually mundane task, the inspiration or information you were seeking magically seems to appear!

The Crown Chakra;

Excessive worry can indicate itself here in a physical way. One of the most common is when you see people holding their head in their hands in despair or deep concern; when they ‘just don’t know what to do’ or can’t see the answer to a certain predicament. They may feel totally blocked in being able to see a way forward and keep their head looking downwards.

Most of the indicators above link directly with your body language and happen every day. However when you look deeper into the Chakras and understand more about their connection to your mental, emotional, spiritual and physical well being, then I believe you achieve a more authentic view of your own true potential and wonder as a human spirit.

Working on the environment to bring you the benefits of lasting good health- a fitness plan for the buildings around us; throbbing, sensitive bodies alive with vibrations and negative radiations. Fellow "living beings", as it were!

Actually, we’re discussing a fitness plan for the building!

No, not another tedious memo on the wonders of fat-burning and ab-firming exercises! This time, we work on the environment to bring you the benefits of lasting good health.

Sounds incredible? Here’s the quick technical background: Turns out that our “Structural Environment” the buildings around us – are actually throbbing, sensitive bodies alive with vibrations and negative radiations. Fellow “living beings”, as it were!

If experts are to be believed, they emanate radiations that criss crosses with others in the neighborhood to produce destructive energies and rays. The phenomenon can strongly influence our bodies and minds, thus impacting progress, success and productivity negatively.

Remember the recurring headache you had some months back? Or that coffee machine at work that seems to conk off every other Friday? That colleague who suddenly went into a depression and apparently never recovered? Or the one who had a breakdown and had to quit?
Research now tells us that it could all be the effects of a mal-adjusted, hostile environment.

So can we do something about it? Yes. There is a field of science dedicated to the detection, measurement and “energy correction” of such negative rays and vibrations in the environment with the help of proven scientific knowledge, methods and instruments. It’s called Environics.

You could look at Environics as a Diagnosis and Wellness Programme – for our homes, cities, factories and industries. It aligns us to the positive healing energies that they produce, while restricting their negative vibrations from spreading and wreaking damage.

Food for thought for wellness freaks who thought a yearly subscription to the gym was the solution to all their fitness issues. Or, indeed, for architects, builders, corporates and businessmen for whom this represents a very immediate and relevant concern.The message is clear: If you want to be in the pink of health and spirits, make sure your building is in ship shape, too!

Health and Self Improvement
I was happily listening to my yoga teacher’s calm voice today as she gently instructed and led us through our class, and I had an insight. I could use her directions to live my life in a much calmer way! I started listening more closely as I moved through my asanas, which felt so good after not having done yoga in a few months. These were wonderful directions to help live in a stress-free way. I would like to share my thoughts and give you ideas how you can live your life in a “yoga” way!

1. Breathe. My instructor asked us to focus on our breathing. How often have I suggested to my clients and friends to stop and take a breath to relieve stress? Stop and make sure you breathe deeply into your lungs. Fill your lungs with the much-needed oxygen and fill your body with this life giving force.

2. Don’t hunch up your shoulders. The way my teacher put it today, was “don’t wear your shoulders as earrings.” How often have we tensed and stayed tensed until our neck, back and shoulders ache?

3. Listen to your body. In yoga, your body will tell you if it can hold a pose and whether you can challenge it at that time. My instructor tells us to rest in child’s pose if we need to. Throughout our own days, we need to listen to our own bodies. If you are tired, you need to hear your body tell you to rest. You need to learn to listen to hear whether you are truly hungry or thirsty. Your body will tell you what it needs.

4. Don’t judge yourself by the other people in the class. Challenge yourself to live the best life you can, for you. Yoga is not a competition. Life doesn’t need to be competitive. There is plenty for all of us and we all need to move and do things in our own way—a way that brings us fulfillment and happiness.

5. Each pose has a counter pose. When you work your body with backbends, you balance this out with a foreword bend. Here it is—the harmony we want in our lives. The balance between work and play, rest and activity, studying and experiencing.

6. Stretch. Feel your body extend itself. Do stretches throughout the day to loosen your muscles and keep your body flexible. Let’s also stretch the mind toward learning and new ideas.

7. Try to do the balance poses, but realize that on some days we will not be as balanced as on other days. Sometimes, we can balance on one side better than on the other side. What if you cut yourself some slack on the days you didn’t feel “balanced” and realize that you may have to take it slower or easier?

Let’s use these ideas in our daily life and see if we can be a little calmer, a little gentler, and a little less stressed at the end of our “yoga day.”

When suffering from a physical illness we have obvious symptoms of pain and discomfort and rely upon familiar medical practices or natural remedies to provide relief. But transparent psychological disturbance does not necessarily carry with it such readily discernible symptoms. This can result in the disturbance becoming clinical over time, demanding the need for psychiatric care.

In order that we avoid any anxiety about our own health, we need to know what the early symptoms of mental disturbance are-symptoms that have the propensity to develop into mental illness. This will enable us to be aware of any problem should it begin to develop in ourselves.

Not only that, but we need to know how we can empower ourselves to change our psychological states and habits so as to improve our mental well-being, in the event that we do develop a concern about our on psychological well-being. for more details:-www.insomnia-battle.com.

Studies show that the majority of people in these circumstances have little confidence about identifying or embarking upon a self-help program. Few people are aware that a proven system of psychological and intellectual betterment is at hand in the teachings of Raja Yoga.

So then, what are some of the common symptoms of mental illness?

Aside from the well known and generally acknowledged disorders such as serious stress and clinical depression which manifest in varying degrees of intensity, we can readily observe other signs of mental and emotional problems, for example:

Exaggerated emotional responses -Sudden mood swings -Nervousness and fears of all kind -Irrational speech and behavior -Anxiety (this can apply to a limitless range of concerns) -Chronic Allergies -Morose or negative moods -Lack of enthusiasm for life -Inability to demonstrate affection -Cruel or selfish behavior -Chronic insomnia -Nightmares -Lying, stealing and other unethical behavior -Violent behavior -Lack of creative activity -Reluctance to talk in a one- to-one situation -Extreme dependence -Inability to relax -Unhappiness.

However it is important that people don’t rush headlong into self-help situations should they be experiencing one or some of these symptoms, for they man well be the result of some malady that requires the care of a health professional. for visit details:-www.bad-breath-secrets.com.

In the event that such is not the case though, then some serious thought can be given to following a program of self-help; and one of the very best self-help programs a person could possibly follow-one that has stood the test of time over hundreds, even thousands of years, is Raja Yoga. People need to open their minds to the possibility that this ancient teaching can help them. They need to take a really hard look at it.

Author: Sally Janssen is a writer and educator who from an early age trained in Raja Yoga–that branch of the ancient science that deals with the mind and its complexities. She subsequently gained an international reputation for her skills and her wisdom in the training of the mind.

The low impact of pilates exercises are perfect for the over 50 age group.

Pilates seems to be the perfect exercise regimen for the people that are over the age of 50 due to its low impact exercises that will ensure that a person’s joints remain flexible and that general mobility is increased. Pilates exercises along with a good nutritional plan will allow those over 50 to look and feel many years younger.

You can combine the low impact exercises of Pilates along with weight bearing exercise and with resistance. This is absolutely crucial for maintaining and building bone density to make sure that osteoporosis does not set in after menopause.

The benefits of Pilates for those people over the age of 50 include the following: :A strong back and flexible joints to take years off you • Toned and lengthened shoulders, abdominals, arms, legs and buttocks so that your clothes are able to hang beautifully no matter what size you are • Improved grace and suppleness; improved bone density that will give you long term health benefits.

Aging? Pilates even taking it up after you are 50 years of age, can add healthy, active years to your life. High Blood Pressure- If you do Pilates on a regular basis, it helps to keep the arteries elastic. This keeps the blood flowing and lowers blood pressure.

Overweight? Pilates will help you maintain weight loss. Effects on Joints and Bones Pilates will help reduce stiffness and pain. I will also help build muscles endurance, strength, and well-being. You can feel confident that the Pilates stretching exercises will help increase flexibility without putting stress on the joints.

Back Problems? One of the most common complaints of today is lower back pain. Poor posture is a major contributor to this. If you work on strengthening the abdominal muscles, then this will help alleviate stress on your lower back. Emotional and Psychological Benefits? Pilates will help improve your reaction time. Exercise is able to help with depression and will increase your feelings of well being.

Lack of Sleep? Pilates helps reduce the level of anxiety and stress that you have and helps with sleeplessness. Rehabilitation after injury Once you have had an acute injury, a Pilates program of maintenance will be able to bring your muscles back to an optimal working order.

All of the movements in Pilates are exact, and they involve precise breathing and actions.

The moves are controlled, slow, and continuous and require concentration and greater skill if you are going to do them properly.

Isolation: Pilates is all about working on isolating muscles. By using the isolation method, we identify our muscles particularly the weaker and neglected ones. Pilates helps build awareness of any imbalance in flexibility or muscle strength.

Routine: Pilates does not replace any current exercise program you may be working on. Rather, it is supposed to complement and enhance your current program by improving the way in which your muscles work together. When practicing the Pilates principles you will improve flexibility and strength, skill and speed and will reduce fatty deposits. As your muscles become leaner, your body shape will begin to change.

If you are over 50, Pilates can help you if you have any one of the following: Back problems – Have RSI -Digestive problems- Feel stressed or tired- Want toned thighs/ buttocks- Want good posture – Suffer from neck and shoulder tension- Have headaches -Are overweight- Are recovering from an injury – Want a flatter stomach.

Most people have heard the term reflexology but really don’t have a clear idea what it is. They think of it as some type of new age, alternative type of either healing or personal improvement practice. A vague memory of their pediatrician hitting their knee with a tool with a triangular piece of rubber on the end to check their reflexes comes to mind. If the lower leg moved forward you had good reflexes. Reflexology deals with reflexes.

Reflexologists believe that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands which correspond to all the glands, organs, and parts of the body. They have a unique method of using their thumb and fingers on these reflexes to find areas of congestion and tension and then work these out to help the body work more efficiently.

It is hard to understand how putting pressure on a certain area of the foot could have an affect on an organ or gland. It sounds sort of like acupuncture. The reason reflexology is said to work is because reflexes link each part of the body to a special area on the feet and hands. What connects the reflexes is the nervous system. For example, there are about 7,500 nerve endings in the foot.

When a reflex point is manipulated properly a reflex action, like the tool hitting the knee, is produced through the nerve endings. Some of these nerve endings get damaged or unresponsive. The reflexologist eases the tension on these nerves and blood vessels which allows blood to flow easier helping the body to work better.

If you have ever had a good foot massage you know how relaxing this can be. A foot massage emphasizes the muscular, circulatory and lymphatic systems. Most people know that the circulatory system moves blood through our systems but are not as familiar with the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is an extensive interconnected system of vessels, spaces, and nodes in the body which circulates lymph which is a fluid made from protein and other fluids.

Reflexology not only helps the muscular, circulatory and lymphatic systems of the body, it also affects the inside of the body, all of the organs and glands, everything inside the body.

Reflexologists use a reflexology chart which is a map of the foot showing the specific locations of corresponding body parts as their nerves are represented in the foot. The chart shows which nerve to manipulate for each body part. It is interesting that the left and right foot reflect the left and right side of the body and the heart, lungs, chest and upper back are located in the ball of the foot.

New York reflexology has been a popular holistic therapy since 1995. It reduces stress and tension in your body and promotes good health and well being by restoring the natural balance in your body.

Author: Michael Hazel is the director of operations at Yelo. Yelo is an industry leader in the art of relaxation through reflexology massage paired with sleep. If you need a New York nap , visit Yelo!

This explains the differences between Pilates and Yoga, and discusses the similarities between the two.

You can barely turn on the TV nowadays without hearing about Pilates or Yoga. When you take up a magazine, you are bound to find articles about these two exercise methods and it seems like everyone is doing either one or the other.What is all of the excitement about? Why are these techniques so special? What are the differences and similarities between Pilates and Yoga?

Yoga aims to unite the body, mind, and spirit. The person who aspires to do Yoga views that the body and mind are one. They believe that if the body is given the right tools and is taken to the proper environment then the body can find harmony and will be able to heal itself. Yoga is considered to be therapeutic.

You will have a heightened awareness of your body’s alignment, posture, and patterns of movement. Yoga tends to make your body more flexible and it will help you to relax even if you are in the middle of a stress stricken environment. Therefore, one of the most important reasons as to why people start practicing Yoga is that they want to feel more energetic, be more happy, feel more fit and be at peace.

One performs Yoga mainly in a group setting on a special Yoga mat with the help of a Yoga instructor. You use your body’s own weight for resistance. You must also focus a great deal of your attention to the flow from one posture into that of another. Yoga styles are varied and there is not one style that is considered to be better than another. These styles also vary in their emphasis, and the style you choose is a matter of personal preference.

Pilates also seeks to reach many of the same goals as does Yoga by way of a series of movements that are very controlled. The major difference between Pilates and Yoga is that while doing Pilates exercises not only makes use of a mat, but it also incorporates work on different Pilates machines. The main thrust of the Pilates exercises is to improve posture, strengthen the abdominal muscles, improve balance, lengthen and stabilize the spine and improve overall strength. Pilates will tend to give you a leaner, longer, dancer-like line.

A Whole Body Workout

Unlike a variety of other training programs, Pilates makes an effort to work the whole body and places its emphasis on precision, control, and concentration in both the body as well as the mind. There is no attempt made at doing many repetitions at a time in a rapid, haphazard fashion. Instead, the focus is placed on quality and not the amount of reps you do. The “powerhouse” that consists of the lower back, abdominal muscles and the buttocks are at the center of all movement and this allows the rest of your body to move fluidly and freely. When one focuses on core stabilization, it makes the student stronger from the inside out. This is critical for the advancement of the Pilates student.

Pilates is low impact by nature and, therefore, it is ideal for the prevention of injury and for rehabilitation. Pilates has six guiding principles – concentration, centering, flow, control, breathing and precision. These principles train the body to move more efficiently while placing minimal impact on the body. With Pilates, there is a definite balance between flexibility and strength that creates a vigorous, symmetrical and health workout for all of the different muscle groups, which will result in a more balanced, leaner, and stronger body.

I was recently asked by a friend whether yoga is a good way to lose weight–my answer was a resounding yes! While you will definitely want to incorporate cardiovascular exercise (such as dancing, jogging, cycling, or aerobics) to rev up your metabolism, a yoga practice can be a welcome addition to a weight loss routine, providing both physical and emotional balancing, strength, and joy.

The physical benefits of yoga are numerous:

* Many types of yoga, such as the vinyasa, power, and kundalini styles, are dynamic and flowing, bringing some cardiovascular exercise into the mix.

* All types of yoga help to build lean and long muscles, especially in places you might not have thought to work out, building a more balanced body as you lose weight and helping to burn calories, even when at rest.

* The flexibility yoga brings to the body is amazing-an added benefit when engaged in strength training or aerobic exercise that can tighten the muscles, leading to injury.

* Many yoga poses-such as twists, back bends, and shoulder stands can balance the endocrine system, especially the thyroid, which can definitely aid in weight loss. Certain kundalini kriyas, or exercises are intended solely for weight loss

* A steady yoga practice can also stimulate and balance the digestive and elimination systems, allowing for optimum assimilation of nutrients, elimination of wastes, and reduction of water weight and bloating.

* Yoga puts a lot of focus on breathing correctly, which can release many toxins from the body, allowing all of our systems to function optimally.

Mentally and emotionally, yoga is a great match for someone trying to change patterns and habits. When losing weight it is just as important to pay attention to the emotional body as to the physical. Much obesity and weight gain comes from being out of touch with the body and overwhelmed with emotions and stress, which allows us to make bad choices in what we eat, how much we exercise, the amount of sleep we get–how we take care of ourselves in general.

Devoting yourself to a practice like yoga, which is all about awareness of the body and the breathe lets us get in touch with ourselves, what we want, how we feel, and ultimately why and how we eat. And as with all exercise, yoga can help balance the bodies neurotransmitters-such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine–low levels of which have been proven to increase hunger and cravings for sugars and simple carbohydrates as well as cause depression.

Yoga can also bring much spiritual joy to your life, letting you feed and take care of yourself in a way that has nothing to do with a dependence on food. It allows us to feel lighter, freer and in touch with the world in a way that is less complicated than most things in this world.

When starting a yoga practice, I recommend taking classes, as a teacher can correct your postures in a way that can’t be done while watching videos. Like having a personal trainer when exercising, having a yoga teacher can make your learning curve that much less steep.
